Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth are the last adult molars to appear, usually in your late teens or early twenties. Most people have four, one in each corner at the back of the mouth. Sometimes, there isn’t enough room for them to come through properly, causing them to become impacted—partially or fully stuck under the gum.
Signs to watch for
Impacted wisdom teeth don’t always cause problems, but if you notice:
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Jaw pain or swelling
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste
- Difficulty opening your mouth
Please book an appointment at Guildford Dental Centre promptly.
How to ease discomfort
Rinse with warm salt water several times a day to reduce soreness. Painkillers like paracetamol can help, and antibacterial mouthwash may reduce inflammation. If pain continues, contact us.
Why remove wisdom teeth?
Removal is only recommended if they cause problems such as:
- Damage or pressure on nearby teeth
- Increased risk of decay or gum disease
- Formation of cysts
- Infection due to trapped food and bacteria
The removal process
If needed, we’ll take X-rays and explain the procedure. Removal is usually done under local anaesthetic. Sometimes a small cut or tooth sectioning is required. Recovery may include swelling and mild bruising, which usually improves within a few days.
Keep an eye on them
Regular dental visits, hygiene appointments and X-rays help monitor your wisdom teeth so issues can be caught early.
